Teddy Bears Created by 3DD

Posted by: | December 12, 2011 | 1 Comment |

The students in 3DD designed and constructed their own teddies recently, with assistance from a wonderful mum, Sue, and grandmother, Carlene. I think you’ll agree that each teddy has an individual personality. Students used fabric crayons and textas, and a variety of fabrics to make each teddy an individual.

Everyone has great memories of a favourite teddy. I’m sure that these teddies will become treasured family members.

What do you think of our teddies?

Can you share a memory of your teddy?

Children of Mae Lid Thailand

Posted by: | December 11, 2011 | No Comment |

On Thursday 8th December my friend Bill, who spends much of his time teaching and living in a small Thai village known as Mae Lid, visited the Grade 3 students at our school.

Everyone enjoyed learning about the similarities and differences between our lives. Most of the students couldn’t believe how far the Thai children walked to school, as they are used to being driven. We learned about the ways that the children of Mae Lid entertain themselves. We play many of the same games, such as marbles, elastics and soccer. They are expert bubble blowers! We were very impressed by their fruit carving and flower arranging.

We would all like to thank Bill for taking the time to share his stories with us. Thanks, too, to Sophie for her hard work preparing the Photo Peach slide show. Check out Bill’s beautiful photos and the comments written by the students of 3DD.

Having Fun Playing Bamboo

Posted by: | November 27, 2011 | 16 Comments |

After reading Mrs Yollis’s post about a new recess game we thought we’d give it a try. It’s called Bamboo.

You need two bars to play this and luckily we have two bars on one of our playgrounds. So the next morning we decided that we should go out to our bars and give it a try.

When we got there, the boys and the girls lined up at either end of the bars. First one boy and one girl have both hands on the bars. Then they push up and jump over one side of the bars. Then they run around to the other side and if their opposition player is not quick enough, the other player can try to tag them. If one of the players gets exhausted they can shout “Bamboo!” and the next player in line quickly replaces the tired player.

Check out some videos of us and our teacher playing Bamboo below:

After reading and enjoying the poetry book “Hailstones and Halibut Bones” the students in 3DD were inspired to create their own colour poems. You can click on each picture and listen to the students read their original poems.

BB from 3DD was very excited when Jacqueline Harvey, the author of The Alice-Miranda Series, actually commented on her blog! But she was not the only one who was excited. Rhi, Kamarah,  Alina, Zoe, Skye and Millie are all fans.

We recommend Alice- Miranda books because:

Kamarah says that Alice-Miranda is entertaining because  she’s a good persuader and she sees the good in everyone.

Millie says that Alice Miranda doesn’t act like a seven year old, she acts older. She says things like, “I’m very happy to make your acquaintance, Miss Grimm.”

Zoe says that Alice-Miranda is not afraid of giving things a go. She has to do a big test about the world, she went on a five day hike by herself and she sailed in a race against a really mean girl.

At Leopold we learn about being a successful person. The “You Can Do It” keys are Getting Along, Persistence, Confidence, Organisation and Resilience. Alice Miranda certainly knows how to get along with others and she’s very confident as well as persistent.

We all love the fact that she’s such a chatterbox. There are quite a few here in 3DD, you may be surprised to know!

Have you read any Alice-Miranda books? What do you like about them?

Have you read any other books with good role models?

Toys Now and Then

Posted by: | November 8, 2011 | 3 Comments |

The difference between my toys and parents and grandparents toys are that my toys are electric. Also mum and nanna liked making cubby houses but because we live in the city we can’t do much of that stuff. Kamarah

A toy that my mum,dad and I have is Lego. A toy that only I have is Magic Fabric which is a fabric studio and you make your own fabric dolls. Sophie

My mum grew up in Vietnam and a banana gun was my mum’s favouite toy. First hold the back of the banana, then shoot! Alina

My Mum, Dad and I all love Lego. I particually like Harry Potter Lego. My Nanny did’nt like Lego as much. Millie

Obviously, our parents and grand-parents did not have iPods when they were little. My mum and I both loved lego and my gran and I both loved our teddy bears. Skye

My dad had some match box cars when he was little. He gave some of them to Joel, my brother. Match box cars are mini type of car that boys and girls play with. Charlotte

Gee, lots of toys have changed since my parents and grandparents were young, such as my nana loved playing with her swap cards, my dad enjoyed riding his BMX. My mum really enjoyed playing with her yo-yo, but these days I love playing with my Zhu Zhu puppies which are electronic dogs that move and talk and there’s no mess. See what’s changed. Rhiannon

My mum, dad, grandparents and I all had a hula hoop,a skipping rope and a yoyo. I have the most technology.Olivia

A toy that my mum and dad and I have the same is Lego and teddies. A toy that I only have is a Beyblade. It’s kind like a spinning top but its not. Kadyn

Talking About Toys

Posted by: | November 1, 2011 | 4 Comments |
The grade three students have some homework to do. They have been asked to have a big talk with their parents and grandparents about toys and games.
They will ask their families:

How have toys and games changed since you were a child?

Who, in your opinion, had more fun as a kid and why?

Check out the photos of us with our toys.

Marvellous Toys

Posted by: | October 11, 2011 | 4 Comments |

This term we will be learning about toys and technology.

Some questions we will try to answer are:

What is a toy?

Is a computer (iPod, iPad etc) a toy? When is it not a toy?

How has technology changed the way we play?

What is the difference between a toy and a game?

Please enjoy the video of Peter Paul and Mary singing ‘The Marvellous Toy”.

Tell us about a marvellous toy that you have owned.

Our YCDI Concert

Posted by: | September 23, 2011 | 12 Comments |

Untitled Click here for  a video of us dancing ‘It’s My Life’: sorry about the quality!

We were all very nervous, but everyone summoned up all their confidence and did an amazing job. Thank-you to all the parents who helped us to look the part. There were some very cool looking rock stars on stage last night!

The people that danced and sang were the Grade One, Three and Five students.

This is what we did at the concert:

One class sang and one class danced then they swapped.

At school we have You Can Do It Keys and they are: Getting Along,  Organisation, Confidence and Persistance.

We have YCDI characters at our school and they are: Connie Confidence, Shrinking Voilet, Olive Organisation, Disorganised Danni, Gabby Get Along, Sulky Sally, Peta Persistence, Gerti Give Up, Ricki Resilience, Poor Penny and Little Miss Proper. We had grade five (5) students to be the characters.

All about us: Our song we sang was ‘Firework,’ by Katy Perry and the song we danced to was ‘It’s My Life’, by Bon Jovi.  Before we went at night we  practised at Costa Hall with the whole class and the grade 1s, 3s and 5s.

Here are the other songs:

‘Eye Of The Tiger’ Survivor, ‘It Must Love’ Maddness, ‘Firework’ Katy Perry, ‘It’s My Life’ Bon Jovi, ‘Sunny Side Up’  Backing Track ‘Hakuna Matata’ From the Lion King, ‘Beautiful Day’ U2, ‘Perfect’ Pink, Zip a Dee Doo Dah’ Aly and AJ version,’ I Can See Clearly Now’Jimmy Cliff version ‘Born this way’ Lady Gaga, ‘Price Tag’ Jessie J ‘Sing’ Chemical Romance, ‘The Middle’ Jimmy Eat World.

What was the highlight of the concert for you?

What’s your favourite song?

Have you ever been in a concert? What did you perform?
