Straw Weaving Instructions

P1000817

You will need:

3 straws

wool (some 8 ply)

sticky tape or masking tape

scissors

What to do:

Cut each straw in half.

 Keep 5 halves.

Thread at least 1 metre of 8 ply wool into each straw.

Leave about 1-2 cm poking out the top of each straw.

P1000821

Stick the wool to each straw using a small amount of sticky tape (cellotape) or masking tape. (Keep the tape very smooth)

Lay the 5 straws side by side on a flat surface and tape them together near the bottom.

P1000818

Tie some wool to one of the end straws and begin weaving ( take wool in and out between the straws). Don’t pull the wool too tight!

Gradually push the weaving down .

Remove tape when several lines of weaving have been completed.

To change colours, tie new wool onto the end of your first colour.

HAPPY WEAVING!

Dear Mrs de Vries and 3DD,

What a great idea of a page all about straw weaving. Now people from around the world will be straw weaving in no time!

This weekend I think I know what I’m going to be doing – straw weaving of course! Everyone in my family thinks it looks beautiful and now they want me to teach them.

The picture above of the straw weaving looks very pretty – I love all the beautiful colours. I think the green or pink would be my favourite colours on that one. Hopefully mine turns out as nice as that one did!

    Well, got to go.
    Your friend from 3DD,
    Sophie

    Hi Mrs de Vries,

Not many people do straw weaving, what a shame.

    Bye,
    Ashleigh

Ohhh I think i enjoyed making these more than Kadyn. I think its was great therapy and each day couldn’t wait for Kadyn to get home and show him how much i had done.
We also tried bigger straws and more straws as well as doing it with straws in a circle so we ended up with a tube type thing.
    Heaps of fun!

      Hi Tracy,
I’m glad that you enjoyed the straw weaving so much. It’s very relaxing to weave, isn’t it? We’d be interested to see what you have done. Perhaps Kadyn could bring some of your work to school.

      Deb de Vries
